How can i help my helpless hair?

It is very curly naturally, but it never has been longer than my shoulders. My mom has 3 explanations for it, 1. I brush my hair too harshly. 2. I have a crappy diet. 3. I am mutated(no kidding)

the longest my hair has been, straightened, is about the length of a #2 pencil. I've tried many at-home remedies that everone tells me about, but they do NOTHING. Have any suggestions?
