9 month old with pubic hair?

My 9 month old is being referred to an endocrenologist because his pediatrition thinks he has too much hair in his pubic area. It started out as just the baby fuzzy hair stuff that I thought would go away as he got older but it has gotten darker and more noticable. Has anyone experienced this with their kids? What causes it? The ped. did not give me any insight and seemed to avoid answering my questions. Serious answers only please. This is my only child and I am concerned about his health- I don't need anyone making fun of this. Thanks

Your pediatrician is wise to send you to an endocrinologist. The endocrinologist will look for further signs of premature puberty that could be caused by severe hypothyroidism, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, an adrenal tumor, or maybe a hormone-secreting tumor. Your son's testosterone level and his hCG (human chorionic gonadrotropin) level will definitely be checked. The good news is that there are treatment options, specifically numerous hormone-suppressing medications and surgical removal of any possible tumor. Try not to worry. It could be a condition that is simply monitored and be none of the above.

I don't know why he'd have this much hair, but honey, I don't think it would be something that you should worry about until you've heard otherwise. It'll be okay, just know that you're doing the right thing by having it checked out. Good luck~

It would be a hormone imbalance caused by any number of things. It can be VERY serious.

But the number of causes are so endless, and I am not an expert so I would really not want to expand upon what I said above. I am sorry, I know you want answers NOW, but I am not comfortable with that.

My best friend's neice started her period when she was a small baby. She had to have monthly shots in order to prevent her from having it again. They said something about if she hadn't had the shots she would have stopped growing or would have been a midget or something. She is a perfectly healthy teenager now though and almost grown.

This is a hormone imbalance in your child. It is a good idea that you are being referred to a doctor. They will probably do some blood tests, and figure out what the problem is.

Hope all gets better.

I have not experienced this, nor have heard of this in anyway before your mention just now. Indeed, it's very peculiar.

my 6 1/2 month old son has this also, but he has a patch on top of his bottom on his lower back (just like his dad!), i have been assured this is completely normal, some babies are just very hairy and others are not. I used to be worried about it alot, but now i look at it and think aw how cute!. In your case it may or may not be a hormonal imbalance, but if the doctor seemed not to be too worried, that is a good sign. Good luck i know exactly how you feel, i think you the first mum who has the same thing with their baby i have spoken to! Finally someone who doesn't think that it's weird just because of a little extra hair!
