We need a license to drive a car...practice law...even to cut hair....but anyone can have a kid, regardless of their parenting skills, life skills, criminal record, drug abuse...is it fair to kids to get bad, absent parents...is it fair to ask tax payers to fund them? Would a screening process help?

I think it should be mandatory that from 12 till 21 women and men as soon as its possible recieve free birth control. Therefore giving people more time to really know what they are doing.

That wouldn't really work. What would happen if someone without a license had a kid? The orphanages would overflow.

Should be, but the problem is that people would run the licensing process therefore they would be culturally biased in who they licensed. The thing that needs to happen is after 2 kids out of marriage your tubes should be tied until you are married. Also, the penalty for not taking care of your child or paying child support should be castration.

The Chinese say you get 2 kids and that's it. I don't think this is a bad thing, but their legal system and gov't run with less crap than ours does.

YES!!!!!! But that idea makes too much sense.

I would start by making any woman that receives any public aid, any woman receiving federal or state financial aid, and 13 year old daughter of any one on SSI, Welfare, wic, etc. to have their tubes tied during the time they received financial assistance....

Maybe even if ALL women had to have their tubes cliped at 13, and then go before a magistrate or something before they had kids, that would be great.

And under no circumstances, would a woman under 21 be allowed to have kids.

Interesting you asked that. I just suggested that in my answer to some joker who is more worried about which breed to adopti an adult pit bull or an adult standard poodle, than about the dog's temperaments around a new baby.

But sadly no. As with everything else it would just turn into another governmental money making scheme unfairly burdening the middle class and oppressing the poor.

as wonderful as it may sound, and as noble a cause as eliminating bad parents is, I think that such a law would do more harm than good, there are all kinds of laws and ideas that sound good on paper and have bad consequences in reality. I think you have to be VERY VERY careful when limiting peoples rights, and a law like this sounds to me like it would be an easy breeding ground for corruption, afterall whoever is in power could impose their standards of who is and isnt a fit parent, and that may not always be right and just. its a good cause, but I dont think this is a good solution, its simply too dangerous, there are too many ways that it could be misused. again, peoples rights and liberty are precious and must be handled with care. keep pushing for the changes in parenting you want to see, encourage couples to be more responsible before having children (financially sound, free, handling any emotional or mental problems, ect) do what you can and keep thinking of solutions, but I dont think this one would work out.

please as upset as any of you may be, consider that theese people have rights, and yes protecting any potential children from having parents like that is a nobel cause, but dont violate people in the process...

The problem is, the current system requires immigration to increase population growth to sustain the economy. If we limited who had children, and most people who have children probably shouldn't, we'd just have to compensate with more immigration. That would come with its own array of issues. (And as most of those immigrants wouldn't be allowed to have kids, we'd need a constant influx of new ones...)

If population decline was actually something desirable (which it is from an environmental standpoint) then it would be a very good idea, in fact regulating who has children is probably the ONLY humane strategy to reduce population.

Regarding fears of Nazi-esque population control, it really doesn't matter from an objective standpoint. The future population would be different because of the laws, but populations change all the time anyways for whatever reason. So it really doesn't matter. The idea that reproduction is a fundamental right is embedded in our current social system but there isn't really anything fundamental about any right, and not all systems have the same view.
